Christchurch Local History Society

Events

The Christchurch Local History Society meets at the Christchurch Junior School, Clarendon Road, Christchurch each month from September to May. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month, except the September meeting is on the second Tuesday. A nominal entrance fee is charged; members £1.00 and non-members £2.00. All meetings start promptly at 7:30 p.m. and usually last c. 2 hours.

Tuesday, 8th September 2009 - A Mill on the Stour; by Colin Cope, the custodian of White Mill for the National Trust.—

Tuesday, 6th October 2009 - The Origin of Words and Sayings;by Derek Fones, the result of years of fascinating research through Briatain’s Stately Homes.—

Tuesday, 3rd  November 2009 - Thomas Hardy; by Anne King, a look at some different aspects of his life with many local connections.—

Tuesday, 1st December 2009 - The History of Portland; by Peter Weldon, the archaeological, industrial and defensive history of the Island. 

Tuesday, 5th January 2010 - Keeping it in the Family; by John Smith, the history of the Beaulieu Estate from Cistercian monks to the Montagu family. 

Tuesday, 2nd February 2010 - Not For Sale;  by Alan Hyde, a collection of Alan’s historical and hilarious gaffs and blunders from early broadcasting.

Tuesday, 2nd March 2010 - Dorset of Old;  by Paul Sturgess, a collection of beautiful historical photos from our well known local photographer.—

Tuesday, 13th April 2010 - Discovering Dorset-part 3; by Rev. Stuart Timbrell, everything you never knew about deepest darkest Dorset ! —

 May 2010 - Annual General Meeting -to be notified.

The AGM of the Society will be held at Christchurch Junior School at 7.15 for 7.30 p.m. This will be an opportunity for Members to meet and hear about projects that the Society is involved in and its plans for the future.
